Character: Ein
Series: Cowboy Bebop
Version: anime, before episode 24 (Spike never died, Faye never regained her memory, Ein and Ed never left the Bebop)
Age: 3 (appears 20 in human form)
Gender: male
Sexuality: heterosexual
Appearance:
Canine Form: Ein is a purebred Welsh Corgi. He is small for a dog – about a foot tall at the shoulder, and a bit longer than he is tall, so he looks like a loaf of bread with legs and a head. He has short legs, soft brown eyes, large triangular ears, and a stub for a tail. His coat of short, coarse fur is sable (tan) with white on his belly, paws and a spot of white just above his little black nose.
Human Form: Ein is about five and a half feet tall and of average build – maybe a little bit underfed. He appears to be about twenty years old. He has close-cropped tan hair with a shock of white above one eye. His large, coarse hands and feet have nails that are tougher and longer than normal, reminiscent of claws. His ears are also a bit larger than normal, and taper to a fine point, like those of elves. When he smiles, one can see that his canine teeth are still fanged. His eyes are still a dark, rich brown, and if one looks closely one can still see fine tan fur on his back, legs, and arms.
Personality: Ein is curious and very intelligent, though not nearly as reckless as Ed. He's a little more cautious than she, but that doesn't mean he's afraid of a little adventure and danger. Though he's normally very easygoing – he tolerates nearly everything the crew of the Bebop throws at him – being suddenly thrust into a strange world alone and in a foreign body has put him a little on edge. However, he's encountered many strange things during his travels, so he hasn't gone completely mad.
Even though he's amazingly smart, Ein is still a dog first and foremost. When confronted with something strange or frightening, he will do as any dog does – either fight, or run away. Preferably run away. Still, the more rational part of him will soon take over, and he will assess the situation much as a human does.
Ein is very pragmatic and is grounded firmly in the here and now. He is able to consider the future and remember the past, but those are unimportant to him. The future will come in time, and the past can't be changed, so there's no use fretting.
Abilities/Weaponry: Though his senses are greatly diminished as a humanoid compared to his canine form, Ein can still smell and hear much better than humans. He can also see in the dark very well (though again, not as well as when he was a dog). He is very observant and has a near-photographic memory because of his genetic modifications.
He has no weapons, save his hands, his teeth, and his wits.
Weaknesses: Ein is completely new to his humanoid form. Thus, he is rather clumsy and would probably lose a fight. Also, he has a limited grasp of human social graces (living with the likes of Spike and Faye hasn't helped much). If someone was lying to him, he probably wouldn't be able to tell unless it was blatantly obvious.
He is also colorblind, a side effect of his improved night vision. He can't tell the difference between blue and purple, and has a hard time seeing red against a green background. Still, he can see more colors than he could when he was a dog.
History: Ein's earliest memories are of small, warm bodies next to him – his brothers and sisters. They were raised in sterile, white laboratories, and he knew his mother only vaguely. Several times a week, humans in coats as white as the walls would come in and take one of the pups away for a while. Ein learned to enjoy when the humans came for him; it meant he got to play a game of some kind, such as matching shapes or repeating melodies on a big keyboard made just for him. He must have been really good, since he played games for the humans much more than his brothers and sisters. After a while, though, Ein got bored with the simple tasks the white-coated humans gave him. Every day, the same white walls, the same people, the same food...
Then the people came. In the middle of the night, a man Ein didn't recognize – one that smelled like fear – grabbed him and put him in a box before he even knew what was going on. It was pitch dark and cramped and he was jostled all over the place. When the case was finally opened, Ein was in a place he'd never seen before. There were so many noises, sights, sounds, smells! He had to go explore, of course. So he ran off into the city.
But... there were people chasing him. Lots of people, people he'd never seen before. And there was the truck with two of the white-coated people after him too. But there was one man, a tall guy who smelled like cigarettes and pepper, that Ein liked. He seemed nice – nicer than any of the scientists at the lab. He helped Ein escape from the scary people who'd put him in the box. So Ein decided to stay with him, though the man growled a yelled at him a lot.
Spike the Pepper-Man took Ein back aboard the Bebop, where Ein met Jet (Leaves-and-Steel), Faye (Lots-of-Perfume) and, best of all, Edward, whose scent baffled even Ein. Though the Bebop wasn't as clean as the lab, and Ein didn't get to eat nearly as often, he still loved living there. It was always interesting – so many things to learn! He and Ed became great friends, and they had lots of adventures together. Ein got scared sometimes, and he oftentimes wondered about the sanity and intelligence of his friend. But that just made things more exciting, right?
Of course, there were always rumors of... strange things. Creatures of shadow that lurked in the darkness and came out only at night, monsters with dead yellow eyes... but they were always just rumors. People who talked about the Shadow People, as they were called, had a way of conveniently disappearing after a while. Though it was never discussed, everyone knew who had taken them. Ein never saw the Shadow People. Therefore, he didn't believe they existed – after all, how can it be proven if he hasn't even smelled or seen one? He was curious about them, though. He kind of wanted to learn more about them, especially as stories of people getting killed and eaten by the shadow monsters became more and more frequent.
Then, one day, Ein was on Mars with Ed doing a reconaissance mission for Faye. They were busy sneaking into a warehouse that was the hideout of their next target, when suddenly everything was gone. All the smells, sounds – everything. The next thing Ein knew, he was in a bright place with almost no scents, and Ed was nowhere to be found.
